Straight out of Wacky Racers this mad cap motor had a giant engine driven vacuum system to keep the car sucked to the ground. Initially this created huge amounts of grip, but drivers found that slowing down mid-corner would mean a sudden lack of grip… Formula 1 marshalls noticed that on the grid, the cars would bob up and down as the driver revved the engine and the fans sucked the car down. The Brabham BT46 was banned after one race, which it won.
Red Victor 1 is perhaps the most insane creation on this list. Boasting more than double the power of a Bugatti Veyron and nitrous oxide injection, this road legal rocket sounds like something out of Mad Max. Capable of getting to sixty in a second, this mad machine is at home at Santa Pod where it regularly trounces the competition. The original bodywork of a Vauxhall Victor has been suitably pumped up to resemble a nasty steroid-addiction-on-wheels. Red Victor 3 is under construction and is rumoured to have around 3000bhp…
The Q car
Originally conceived as a luxurious saloon with styling influenced by the great Ferrari Daytona, the Rover SD1 started out quite well for a Rover. Somewhere along the line, this particular model became a Frankenstein’s Monster of epic proportions… The owner installed a 27 Litre V12 Meteor engine (from a centurion tank) at the cost of 2 marriages and several late nights. Apparently the engine only needs to spin at 1500rpm or so to provide some monsterous overtaking entertainment!
The Luxury car
The Rolls Royce Meteor was created by gearbox specialist John Dodd. The appropriately named “Beast” had a Rolls Royce aircraft engine and a 3 speed automatic gearbox. Looking like a giant Ford Capri with a Rolls Royce grill and Spirit of Ecstasy, the Beast attracted a lot of attention, including that of a Rolls Royce jobsworth, who notified the company. Unhappy with the unauthorised use of the grill and company image, they took Mr. Dodd to court. Naturally he turned up in the Beast!
The TVR Speed 12 was one of TVR’s famous show cars, created at the last minute just before the British motor show. Attaching two of the company’s speed 6 engines onto a common crank created the 7.7 Litre V12 that gave the Speed 12 its name. A few cars were made initially, only one actual Speed 12 was sold, after the buyer was interviewed specially about the car. The car was never produced in number as then boss Peter Wheeler described the car as too fast for road use. Basically a race car for the road, this TVR would cling to the road harder than a reality TV show winner clings to their shortlived fame.
Power estimates vary from 600bhp to 850bhp, although the car managed to break a dyno designed to withstand 1000bhp. The car was also thought to have got to 200mph in around 30 seconds, making it blindingly quick!
The bowler wildcat is probably one of the few modern off roaders not used in the urban school run. And rightly so, this chopped down Land Rover was designed for the rigours of serious off roading, we’re talking Dakar rally not Dagenham commute. The appropriately named Wildcat would make the average Cayenne driver wet themselves, with bonkers performance and tough chassis designed to cross the Sahara quicker than a Cheetah with diarrhoea. The appropriately named Bowler Nemesis is the Wildcats banzai replacement.
The Removal Van
The Ford transit is a familar site, whether it’s taking bands to gigs or taking builders to the chip shop. For some unknown reason Ford decided to mid mount one of its Formula 1 Engines in an unsuspecting Transit. Ride height was dropped and the interior stripped to create the worlds fastest removal van.
